BBC 3 Studio Design Project - the first major project of the term: We were tasked with designing a studio set for a web or TV series proposed by us to be shown on BBC3. My proposed series was entitled "Video Gaga", a show that celebrates visual storytelling through the medium of short films or video clips, filmed in front of a live studio audience with one fixed host, a changing celebrity guest each week and people involved in the films invited to come in to talk about their work or showcase live performances.
The series was meant to address the constant influx of new media content every day from video streaming sites such as Youtube, Vimeo, Instagram, Tik Tok and Snapchat, with the aim of spotlighting previously unknown content creators and amateur filmmakers. I had hoped that it would capture the excitement and bonding experience of finding an interesting, easily consumable piece of media and sharing it with peers who will appreciate it or be entertained by it. I developed my design by employing skills like sketching, making moodboards, 3D modelling, physical modelmaking and Photoshop. Although I was not confident in my design at first, going back to visual research and visualizing the space in 3D helped me identify what else could be added to make the space more visually interesting. The feedback I got for my project was 1. to commit to having the "towers" on the sides of the presentation area be screens, and have them be rotatable (each level to rotate individually, in different directions) , but also that scale-wise they were too tall as they would be taller than the cyclorama in the background. 2. For my model, I was asked to consider in the future adding images of the colour projections on the background screens as I had shown in my visuals. This could be done by printing out the image of the colour projections. 3. Reconsider the design of the audience seating. Long coloured cushions over flat benches would be more in theme than the proposed generic folding chairs.
