This was the first Baz Luhrmann film i've watched. I really enjoyed his punchy, witty cuts and dialogue, and how succinctly the characters were conveyed. I loved seeing how he used exaggerated lighting and cameras in certain scenes to make certain characters appear grotesque, to great effect.
Something else i picked up on, whether it was the intention of the director or not, was how sex appeal is shown in the film. You have characters who tended to be more antagonistic, dressed in flashy outfits that tended to be more revealing, with more complicated accessories and brighter colours, yet they somehow feel almost sexless, even in situations where sexual energy is implied, such as in a hot tub. Whereas the more sympathetic characters in the film are dressed more modestly and traditionally, but oozing sex appeal and passion for each other. I thought that was a very clever effect in a film about the passion for dancing framing a romantic love story, and i wonder how much work it must have been for the costume designers, as costume played such a big role in that too.
